Building Learner Engagement

"Learning is an active construction of meaning..." - Jean Piaget

Piaget's statement* is as true today as it was in 1977. But in 1977 we were not in a war for our learner's attention. In 2025, gaining a learner's mindshare is not just a matter of deploying engaging learning materials: It is a marketing exercise.

If your organisation is struggling to bring people into the learning environment - and keep them there - we would be pleased to help. More about our services in the paragraphs below. Just click the headings to expand.

For learning to occur, firstly the learner needs to be motivated. When you are launching your digital learning strategy online, you will also need to ensure learners engage with your training material and that they continue to engage with it until the skills and knowledge have been acquired and even beyond that (to ensure they are still applying the learnings down the road).

As any experienced L&D professional will attest, getting and maintaining engagement is the biggest challenge throughout the process.

Thinking about the main objectives of your learning project is a great starting point. Does your learning initiative aim to:

  • reduce health and safety incidents
  • teach customers about a product you sell
  • improve leadership skills of new managers in your company

...or something else? What are the key outcomes of learning?

Next, let's take a look at the engagement levels you have now. This will help determine how successful your program has been at achieving the above goals. Learning scenarios differ greatly of course - Some companies cannot afford to have anything less than 100% compliance among their working population, whereas for others any learning is a win-win.

It's useful to go back to what you expected when you first set out. For instance, if more than 80% of your expected learning audience is already engaged each month, chances are you don't need a lot of help building engagement. If the learning audience is less than 60% of what you expected when you launched, it's time for a chat.
